You will be using this website to learn all about the 6 different geographic regions of Canada. Each section of the website has important information about the individual region. You will be learning about key things for each area, and will need to understand some terms before you get started:
Natural Resources: materials or substances such as minerals, forests, water, and fertile land that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain (to make money). These things are not man made.
Industries: jobs that happen because of the natural resources - for example, if cod fish are the natural resource (from nature) an industry that might come from that is fishing .
Often students get these confused, remember, the natural resource comes first, and the industry happens because of it. Farming is not a natural resource - rich or fertile soil is the natural resource, and farming is the industry that happens because of this.
Where is the region located: the geographic regions of Canada DO NOT follow the outlines of the provinces and territories, they may stretch across parts of more than one province or territory. Some provinces and territories may even have more than one geographic region in them since the regions are based on things like climate and landforms.
Landforms: are natural features of the landscape, natural physical features of the earth's surface, for example, valleys, plateaus, mountains, plains, hills.
In each region you will also learn about the First Nations people who lived there before the explorers, fur traders, pioneers and railroad workers came. Along with this, you will learn about the people who came to this region later, and WHY they came to this region (every region has its own unique settlement story.
